Margaret Davis Wins It All At Carlsbad!!! "87" is number 1 at the finish!

When the Carlsbad Marathon officials decided to issue Margaret "Mahgy" Davis bib #87, an elite runner's number, they didn't realize just how "elite" of a runner she is. It was initially given to her because she was the oldest competitor in the race at 87. (Oh yeah, and she did win last year's race, age-graded) She proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she was more than worthy of carrying that number when she crushed the other 7,101 runners by posting a time of 2:47:59 which translated to an age-graded finish rating of 99.86% and gave her the overall race win! In near perfect conditions Mahgy, along with her daughter and running mate Colleen Heublein, grand daughter Katie and Mike Roblee took the gun on Sunday morning and they never looked back. They did, however, take time to stop and say hi to a couple of friends. At mile marker 8 they saw Steve and Joanne Scott and decided to stop, give a few hugs and have a quick chat before continuing on. Can you imagine what her time might have been without socializing along the way?

It is hard to put into words what Mahgy has accomplished in her relatively short running career. Since she began competing at age 79, Mahgy has posted dozens of race wins in the marathon, half marathon, 5k and 10k races, set world and national records and has been a source of hope and encouragement for many. Shouts of "Go Mahgy" can often be heard from spectators and fans along the way. Even competitors get into the action and root her on....as she's passing them.

What's next? Mahgy and Colleen are already starting to train for the LA Marathon in March. The race will begin at Dodger Stadium and finish in Santa Monica. Both Mahgy and Colleen were extended invitations to run the LA race by Mr. Russ Pillar, president of the LA Marathon, and were also given free entry to the event.

at different distances, events, or against other
athletes of either gender and/or of any age. The
score can also be used to measure the performance
of the athlete using the chart below.

70-79% = Regional Class
60-69% = Local Class

Margaret Davis Gets "Elite" Number for Carlsbad Half-Marathon. Organizers finally get it right!

It's a good thing that Margaret "Mahgy" Davis has her daughter, Colleen Heublein, as her running partner/agent/handler/promoter and watch dog. For years the two have been running and winning marathons and half-marathons while promoters and officials would often pass over the accomplishments of this 80+ year old runner and her daughter. Colleen has had to, on several occasions, set the record straight with the organizers of the events and point out mistakes in scoring and their treatment of this "elite" runner. After last year's Carlsbad Half-Marathon Mahgy was DQed because officials thought that her time of 2:43 was an age-graded result and therefore it was thrown out. Once again it was Colleen to the rescue and she was able to get them to realize their mistake. As a result, the time was not only reinstated and was good enough for her division win, but also for the age-graded overall race win!


The below article was recently posted on the Runners World website. The organizers of this years Carlsbad race are to be commended for making things right by issuing Mahgy a special number for this year's race. Well done, guys. And check your timers carefully 'cause here comes Mahgy!

Two-digit race entry numbers normally are reserved for elite athletes. However, Margaret Davis is being assigned the No. 87 bib in the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half Marathon to take place Jan. 24. That’s because Davis is 87 and the race’s oldest entrant.
She will be joined by two other octogenarians — both 81.
Davis, who lives in Azusa, won in the half marathon’s 80-to-99 age division last year with a time of two hours, 43 minutes. But the timing company, wrongly assuming that her amazing age-graded performance had to be an error, omitted her time from published results.
It was only after Davis’ daughter, Colleen Heublein of Valley Center, brought the omission to the attention of race organizers that the omission was corrected. This year the race committee wanted to do something special for Davis, hence the No. 87 racing bib.
Davis said she competes in several half marathons a year, but only one full marathon, the Los Angeles Marathon in March. While she suffers some back and knee pain, she is training at her gym and ran 11 miles on Saturday to prepare for the 13.1-mile Carlsbad race.
“I get a kick out of beating runners in their 70s,” Davis said with a chuckle.

Mahgy is a promoter of exercise and good
nutrition for seniors and the elderly. She encourages
them to get out and do what they can do. She
also has a lot of influence with young people
which is why several of her grandchildren

Dave Scheidler Hits 60...At Speed Zone and AREA 51. Surprise party a winner!

It was a day of high energy and excitement for Dave Scheidler as a few of his family and friends took him to The Speed Zone for a little high revving fun. What Dave didn't know was that the rest of his family and a lot of friends were ready for Dave to make an unscheduled pit stop at AREA 51 for a surprise party to celebrate his 60th birthday. It's always fun to watch the guest of honor being driven into the party as their reactions range from grins, cheers and sometimes tears. But it was all grins for Dave as he slowly climbed out of the car, a little stunned, but able to give first hugs to his wife, Mary Sue, who organized the surprise stop. Congratulations, Dave on a successful race day and by the looks of all the grandchildren, a successful and blessed life. Happy Birthday!

"Lil' Kass Turns One...At AREA 51!" Family and friends celebrate Kassady's big day!

On December 23, 2008 Kassady Heublein came into this world and the world hasn't been the same since! The pint size little package that we affectionately call "Lil' Kass" seems to have something to say about everything...(like her mom :)...and makes sure that her every need is met! So it made sense that on her birthday she was dressed to the nines, as always, complete with her Happy Birthday Tiara! And her royal subjects did meet her every need. Grandma and Grandpa Heublein had a series of photo ops since all the grandchildren were there and it made for an action packed evening. One of the funniest events of the night was the taking of the picture with all the grandchildren. It was hard to decide which was funniest, the kids climbing all over the golf cart during the picture or all of the friends and family trying to get the kids to smile and look at the camera! It was a great night to be together and celebrate another one of God's little blessings. Happy Birthday Lil' Kass! We love you!
